Trombone Shorty

Born in 1986, Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews is native to New Orleans. He grew up in a well-known musical family and began playing music at an early age on the instruments trombone, trumpet and drums, eventually choosing the trombone as his main instrument which earned him the nickname "Trombone Shorty".

He was playing professionally by the age of five and when he was eight, a club in the city's district where he was born, was named "Trombone Shorty" in his honor.

Trombone Shorty and his band of the same name has toured extensively in the U.S. Canada, Europe, Australian Japan, Russia and Brazil. They have performed at the Grammys, and in 2012 he performed at the White House in honor of Black History Month.

He has appeared on TV shows: Conan, The Tonight Show, Jimmy Kimmel, Late Night, Arsenio, and Austin City Limits.

In 2012 he received the President's Medal from Tulane University recognizing his charitable organization "Trombone Shorty Foundation". The mission of the Trombone Shorty Foundation is to "preserve and perpetuate the unique musical culture of New Orleans by passing down its traditions to future generations of musicians."
